The United States notices an increase when there is an increase in international travel. Travelers sleep in cheap hotels and bed bugs hop in their luggage. When the Americas come back to their home, they now have infected their bed room, which can also infect their entire house. Bed bugs feed off human blood, and can transmit a number of diseases.

The Environmental Protection Agency realizes that there is a problem here in the United States with bed bugs. A congressmen fro North Carilona has plans to inrtroduce the act. This act will help Americans deal with bed bugs in many ways.

First, they would offer financial help to families that cannot afford to eliminate their bed bugs problems. Also, they would allow the EPA to release certain pesticides for “emercency use.” This would assist pest control companies in controling bed busg when there is a natiowide boost of bed bug infestations.

Pest World released several tips that you can do on a weekend for keeping a pest-free home during there warm months.

• Seal up cracks and small openings along the foundation of the house.
• Eliminate sources of moisture or standing water.
• Keep tree branches and other plants cut back from the house.
• Keep kitchens clean by wiping counters and emptying the garbage frequently.
• Keep all food containers sealed.
• Avoid leaving pet’s food dishes out for long periods of time.
• Keep trash containers clean and sealed, both indoors and outdoors.
• Screen windows and doors.

The popular food manufacturing company, Nestlé was deciding weather or not to buy products from the recently shutdown Peanut Corp. of America was a good decision. The Peanut Corp. of America was recently forced to declare bankruptcy because of the Salmonella outbreak. Nestlé came out and said that while choosing distributors for ingredients for their food products, they send inspectors out. The inspectors found rodent feces and live beetles on two separate occasions. This choice by Nestlé saved them millions of dollars. Companies such as Kellogg’s who do not use inspectors, be rely on third party FDA inspectors lost upwards of 70 million dollars from recalled peanut products. Kellogg’s CEO wasn’t happy when he heard the news. PCA was given certificates of honor for the factories condition.

While Peanut Corp. of America is being investigated, it showed that they knew the days they were going to be investigated. The factory could be cleaned for these times. This was truly one of the most unethical food distributing companies in the industry.

The Florida Department of Agriculture released a press released regarding termite swarming. They tell us that they have started to receive calls of “small insects flying around.” Termites are one of the most destructive pests to inhibit a home or structure. The termites will chew away at wood, leaving saw dust left over. Over time, termites can completely destroy anything made of wood. When you see small insects flying around this shows the termites swarming. Termites swarm when they are looking for a new colony.

A home is a large investment. Before you purchase a new home, make sure there has been an inspection done by a licensed pest control company. Also, it is recommended you install a preventative system in your home to notify you when termites are present.

There are two major types of termites, Subterranean Termites and Drywood Termites. Subterranean termites have colonies under the ground, then work themselves up into the structure. They need the ground to stay alive and also dig in a “tunnel” type pattern. They are also commonly found in large numbers. Drywood termites behave a bit differently. Drywood termites usually swarm in smaller numbers, and appear to have more of a wing-like body. Their colonies are found directly inside the wood.

Here are some tips the Department of Agriculture provided us with to help you protect your home from termites.

• Remove wood piles and other cellulose sources from under and next to their homes
• Have an annual inspection of their homes by a licensed professional pest control company.
• Direct water sources, such as air conditioner drip lines and roof downspouts, away from the structure foundation.
• When purchasing homes, carefully check the termite protection history of the home.
• Obtain a termite protection contract and renew it annually.

Inspectors for the Food and Drug Administration got to work this moring investigating their Texas plant. So for in their findings they have found one mouse, leaking roofs, rodent droppings, bird nests and peanut paste buildups on machines. This is just the very begenning of the inspections that the FDA will be doing.

There is talk of congress working on passing a bill that would give the FDA more power in regards to inspections and public health.

The FDA has announced that they would like everyone to be aware of what is in there kitchen cabinets and what they are eating. The FDA believes that there are still many peanut products out there that have been recalled that people have ignored.
